音をつくる作曲家、音を奏でる演奏家、両者の肉体は神経を使い音を描く。
音は耳から肉体へと入り込み、身体を巡る性質を持つ。身体を巡る音楽は、血液と類似する構造であると仮定し、「血液としての音楽」を図形楽譜として表現することで、視覚的にもより身体的な表現ができると考えた。
これまでに11名の作曲者へ「あなたの血液としての音楽は、どのような楽曲ですか？」と問いかけて作曲を依頼し、全12作品の「血液としての音楽」と、その図形楽譜が誕生した。
これらの作品は、作曲家の身体に流れていた音楽が血管として通う、一個体の刹那的な身体構造を尊ぶものである。
図形楽譜製作者は、作曲者各個人との綿密なヒアリングを重ね、各楽曲が持つ意図や思想の解釈を試みる。
円形図形楽譜の記譜方法においては、作曲者の意志に応じ採用された音楽記号の含意を汲み取り、楽譜を表現した。よって、楽譜として機能は保たれつつ、より自由に解読でき直感的に演奏できる図形楽譜となった。
五線譜が円形であるのは、心臓が血液を全身へと送り出して戻っていく１分間の循環を象徴している。楽器を通じて「血液としての音楽」が巡り、演奏方法によって毎周分ごとに微妙に異なった旋律が繰り返される。
これらの図形楽譜が演奏されるとき、音楽は空間と融解し血液として流れ出す。
音が耳へと侵入し、音楽と身体とが循環しているのだ。

Notate with Nerve
Composers who make sound, performers who play those sounds ‒ both use the nerves inside their bodies to paint sound.
Entering the flesh through the ears, sound has a disposition that enables it to travel around the body. Supposing that this music that travels around the body can be likened to blood in its construction, by portraying “blood as music” through graphic scores, a more visceral, physical form of expression can be visually achieved.
As part of this project, 11 different composers were commissioned to write a piece of music based on the question,
“What kind of piece would your blood be like if it were music ?”.
12 pieces in total were born from this idea of “blood as music”, as musical works that utilize graphic scores for their performance.
They illustrate the flowing of music through each composer's body like blood vessels, and pay special heed to the transient nature of bodily structure. With the purpose of understanding the thought and intention that lays in the conception of each piece of music, the creator of the graphic scores conducts several discussions with the composers.
When writing the musical notation onto a circular graphic score, once achieving an understanding of the implications inherent in conventional musical notation, a more expressive method of notation is sought – as a result, the ability for the score to keep its function remains, while the graphic notation helps to encourage a freer interpretation, and a more intuitive performance.
The usage of a circular stave symbolizes the way the heart sends blood and receives it over a 1-minute cycle. This “blood as music” travels around cyclically through instrumental performance, and depending on the method of performance, sometimes results in minuscular changes within repeated melodies.
When these graphic scores are performed, the music fuses with space, and flows like blood.
The sound penetrates through the ears, and circulates as music within the body.
