2016.12.15-17
On 15-17 December 2016, there was a special performance of "Holistic Strata" and “Prototype for the round dome theater” by Hiroaki Umeda at the Arts & Science LAB. of the Tokyo University of the Arts’ (TUA) COI Site (planning / production by the Research on robotics & performing arts group and dance / choreography by Hiroaki Umeda).
One of the performance pieces, “Prototype for the round dome theater”, was an energetic new performance by three female dancers of the “Somatic Field Project” which integrated audiovisual materials and physical expression based on a movement method unique to Mr Umeda and making full use of the round screen.
The other piece performed “Holistic Strata” was choreographed by Mr Umeda for the first time in 2011 which was critically acclaimed in Europe and the United States, and it has been performed many times around the world. Intense electric sounds and a unique projection of particle-like dotted lights flying around, combined with a powerful, flowing organic dance all while Mr Umeda's center of gravity is running from the soles of his feet to various parts of his body in a controlled spiral, this performance created a sense of space for the audience to feel as if they were traveling back and forth between different dimensions and reality.
In the “after-talk”, Mr Umeda and Oriza Hirata (planning director), group leader, had a talk session. Mr Umeda commented that the concert held in the round dome theater with such an unusual shape was challenging as he had to be even more conscious to choreograph space and light. A lively Q&A session was then held with students and others from the audience regarding the visual materials, sound and dance.
There was a questionnaire for the audience (number of effective answers 133). To the question "was the performance meaningful?" 76.2% answered "I strongly agree" or "I agree somewhat". To the question “did the round dome theater bring out the best of the performance pieces?” 75.0% answered "I strongly agree" or "I agree somewhat". To the question “do I want to see another performance in the round dome theater?” 85.6% answered "I strongly agree" or "I agree somewhat". This was a meaningful performance that made full use of the characteristics of the round dome theater.
