Tokyo University of the Arts Center of Innovation
Outline
The Center of Innovation Science and Technology-Based Radical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program (COI STREAM), which was launched jointly in fiscal year 2013 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the Japan Science and Technology Agency, Tokyo University of the Arts Center of Innovation (COI) establishes a model envisioning a harmonious society and hi-quality lifestyle. The program intends to identify the challenges of innovative R&D lying ahead for our society 10 years from now, knock down the existing walls of fields and organizations, and to conduct R&D starting from the stage of basic research carrying through to practical application.
This program aims to achieve, through industry-university collaboration, the creative innovations that would be impossible by either companies or universities alone, and to establish a platform in Japan. Under this framework, the Tokyo University of the Arts COI site strives to build a society, which is abundant not simply in terms of material conditions, but is overflowing with a richness of mind by integrating the disparate fields of art and science & technology, and collaborating with the education, healthcare and welfare services towards the “building of a living environment with a high-quality of life (becoming a prosperous and reputable country)” as was set out as ‘Vision 2’ of this program.
Arts & Science LAB
Tokyo University of the Arts newly established the “Arts & Science LAB.” in the Ueno campus as a part of the “Project to Establish an International Science and Technology Innovation Center through Industry-University Collaboration Utilizing Local Resources”. This leads to build a platform to deliver creative innovations which cannot be achieved by either companies or universities alone.
Following the start of COI program supported by Mext and JST in fiscal year 2015, the Tokyo University of the Arts COI site has started to deliver contents widely and has developed infrastructures both in Japan and abroad by collaborating with the education, healthcare and welfare services sectors.
Moreover, our COI site aims to produce a variety of educational experiences with high-quality reproductions of cultural heritage and visual contents that combine the fields of art, history and science & technology based on the theme of ‘Creating Innovation for “Synesensory” through Inspirational Art and Science & Technology’. We also research to contribute to the fields of education, healthcare and welfare services through robots with original software. We aim to achieve a harmonious society where we learn from people with disabilities about the profound inspiration coming into contact with art. The COI will be drawing up plans to develop contents and programs that create a new inspiration through sports and arts of coming 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We will also imple ment the ways to utilize Japanese cultural resources.
We intend to build a harmonious society and an environment that are full of richness of mind, beyond mere material affluence through this program.
